Both are correct depending upon which top you are referring to.
If it's a generic top (any top), then use 'a': "Did you know that a good spin and whip of the string can make A top spin for more than an hour?"
If it's a specific top, then use 'the': "That's an excellent top you have there. Did you know that a good spin and whip of the string can make THE top spin for more than an hour?"

depends on if you mean any old top (use "a") or a very specific top (use "the").
