Is it normal for a dog to have a bloody discharge before having her pups?

I would like to know if it could be sometimes normal for a small dog (Yorkie) to have a bloody discharge before she delivers..

She is due and hasn't had an appetite since yesterday. Her belly is tight and I can feel her pups moving around.

Could it be that one of the pups is not in position, in the birth canal? Could this cause a bloody discharge? If so, is it possible that I could massage her belly/abdomen and get the pup to move?

I took her temp and it is 102, which is normal. Her heart rate is steadily normal also.

If I can move the pups around so that she could have a normal delivery, it would be a whole lot better for all concerned.

Please don't tell me to take her to the vet. I already know this.. I just want to see if I can do anything to help her along. before I take her.

Thank you for responding respectfully.

Peace and Blessings

Update:

Her temperature just dropped to 99.6 which usually means she is near ready to deliver.

Update 2:

I am not a dog breeder nor do I intend to be. My Silkie and Yorkie got together and I am just trying to be a good mom. I called the vet. He said that all seems normal so far but, to keep him posted.

Thank you for your kind consideration. :D

I agree with Billo Baggins and those who criticised Carrol for not knowing what to do because she owns a dog is so absurd from reality that those people who did criticise Carol need to go and have a reality check themselves.

I would say that it is normal for the mother to have the liquid from the amniotic sac come out during the birth, and some very small amount of blood would not be bad.

If she strains to give birth for a long time, do take her to the vet.

In all the years I had dogs I saw fairly easy births, but one last Border Collie lost her whole litter and of course the pups were dead before delivery, so she had a terrible time. I took her to the vet when the first pup was born dead, and sure enough, they all were.

I had to go through that trauma alone, no one home to help, but luckily my vet was only a quarter mile from my house.

That would have been a fine litter, good bloodlines, but I'm just glad the vet was able to save her life.

She lies at my feet as I type this, and I'm so happy I made the decision not to wait any longer.

Toy dogs sometimes have a worse time of it in delivery, so watch her carefully.

    Good luck!

You are the breeder of record because you are the owner of the mother.

The temperature drop (below 99F) is just one indicator that whelping should start within 24 hours. Any bloody fluid (or any dark green or black fluid) coming out before the first whelp is born means she is having a medical emergency. There should not be any bleeding up there now. She needs to be rushed to a veterinarian. It could mean her life.

I have been around calving season......and been around ranching in the western Rockies on Montana for several years before. You usually take care of your own animals unless you need the precautionary measures of your local vet. Ye s bleeding can be bad if it is in excess. ..As one person said...usually dogs seem to have it more times than other critters. A horse sometimes will do it in excess .... if it doesn't stop call a vet. if it is only periodic weeping and flushing ,,,should be no prob . Keep a close eye though.

Hey sweetie. Both of my dogs did have that bloody watery discharge right before they gave birth. I guess it's like the water breaking.

Hope your pup is ok and that she's a happy mom soon.

I have no idea but if dogs are like humans women to have a bloody discharge before giving birth..Good luck on your Yorkie.

  • You don't just need a vet, you need a breed mentor or two. Obviously you are completely irresponsible, because you would have STUDIED everything concerning breeding and whelping PRIOR to the mating and PRIOR to her due date!

Do not touch her abdomen. The last thing she wants is to have someone manhandling her while she's in labor! She should indeed experience some discharge, but I must reiterate that it is VERY scary she's so close to her due date and you're still so clueless!!

Again - LET HER BE, do not mess about with her. Keep taking her temperature, watch for signs of struggling - small dogs are known for having problems whelping, so she may need an emergency C-section.

For the love of God STOP breeding dogs when you don't know what you're doing and aren't remotely prepared!

EDIT: Well, dogs can't help themselves - they don't have foresight and think, "Sheesh, my human doesn't seem to know anything about breeding, I'd better not get knocked up." It is YOUR job and YOUR responsibility and there are NO accidents when it comes to dogs, only ignorant owners. After her pups are adopted out (on STRICT spay/neuter contracts!) get her spayed ASAP.

It would have to be normal. All mammals bleed when they produce offspring.

My son delivered a kitten when it was breach birth. He just turned it around and it came out. I hope it all goes well. They will probably all be fine.
