Checkmate comes from the Persian cry, "Shah mat!" — the king is dead.

Chess is, after all, a form of war.

Source(s): Shah mat ("check mate" in English) means "the king is dead". The object of a chess game is to checkmate the opponent's king.

It's from the Arabic "Shah Mat" meaning "The King Is Dead" the last move of chess means that you have defeated your opponents king and therefor killing it thus taking the phrase "The King Is Dead" pluss people needed a phrase to say to rub it in their faces that they have won ^_^
