For those who are good at college writing?

Ok, I have this writing project about institution's discourse and I have trouble understanding the discourse, institution's discourse, and what are oral, textual, and non-linguistic realms. Could someone explain some or all of these?

What is discourse? Is it like when military use "Jarheads" as to refer to newcomers? Or is it like American spelled "humor" and British spelled "humour"? If not any of these, could you give me an example?

Note: I'm not asking for answers, I just want to understand.

This is not a writing question; it's a linguistics question.

Discourse is not really about the words or terms or communication themselves, but what those words, terms, and communication represent and the people that use them.

Discourse is the written, spoke, and any other type of communication that is expressed by a certain group of people. These groups might be regional, cultural, political, of personal interest, or anything.

Let's look at your account name as an example: "I'm so gangsta...yo sucker"

The language of this phrase suggests you want to give the impression of an urban gangbanger or rapper.

Gangbangers/rappers have their own culture, beliefs, behaviors, and attitudes that are expressed in how they talk, how they write and other forms of communication. This expression is known as the "discourse".

We can call this the discourse of gangbangers.

They have their own words, spelling, pronunciation, grammar syntax, accent, etc. that identify their discourse as belonging to gangbangers and rappers. It's unique that other people hearing it can associate how they talk with that group of people. And there are specific things about this discourse that only the same people in this group can really understand and know what they are talking about.

Oral discourse is the spoken expression of a group of people in how they talk.

Textual discourse is the written expression, like how you spelled out your account name.

Non-linguistic discourse is expression that is not oral or written. For example, a well known non-linguistic expression of gangsters and rappers are baggy pants showing your underwear.

As for your writing project, do you mean an academic institution?

If so, then think about what type of environment and image does a college represent. How do the students and faculty behave and talk and write, and how a college publishes its information.

In thinking about all that, are their common characteristics that are unique to the college environment and how is that expressed and what does that suggest about the college.

For oral, look at how professors and students talk.

For textual, look at how the college writes in its publications and how academic papers are written.

For non-linguistics, look at identifiable characteristics that are unique to most colleges.
