Why don't some people give up the fact that Windows is better than Mac?

When people compare a windows PC with a mac, they compare it with a shitty $300 PC. They don't compare it with the high configuration machines like Alienware M15X, Dell Precision, Lenovo Thinkpad W, HP Elitebook and so on. In addition to being as fast as a mac, Windows is the platform which 955 of the computer industry is interested in. Less games are developed for Mac. GPU drivers are not properly written for Mac and they crash all the time when running CAD or 3D Applications. Moreover, a Mac is also much expensive than the PC counterparts. If we want more stability, we could run RedHat or Fedora in our PC. I don't understand why many people fancy Apple and their PC's.

I've used PCs & Macs for 20+ years, and have written many commercial & scientific programs on both platforms, including device drivers. I'm very familiar with the insides of both Windows OS & hardware and of Mac/Macintosh OS & hardware.

The first thing that can't be disputed is that the Macintosh (original from 1984) was developed by Apple before Microsoft had an inkling of a GUI-based OS. Processors in those days were grossly slow and memory was expensive - dedicating even 8K to graphics was wasteful. That's why Microsoft and others didn't made a full GUI-based OS.

Apple had clever ideas - so they were able to do it with the original Macintosh. Technically it worked very well even with limited resources. Graphics Workstations in those days (fancy UNIX terminals) had the hardware equivalent of the first Macintosh, but those UNIX boxes cost 10-times the Macintosh cost. Apple revolutionized by creating a hardware AND software platform, cheaper than anyone else could do.

Those original Macs were very capable. So capable, that Microsoft wanted to join the action. They first wrote applications (apps) for the Mac - they setup an internal team, and bought them access to Apple developer's team. But Microsoft took advantage of the inside knowledge Apple shared, and Microsoft used the Macintosh info to develop their own Windows 1.0 OS. As anyone who used it knows, Windows 1.0 was a major flop!! Windows1.0 flopped because it wasn't full GUI-based. IBM-compatible PCs didn't have the horsepower or memory to copy the Mac. For three years Microsoft tried to improve it, releasing Windows 2.0 - which still wasn't comparable. That scenario stayed... FAST FORWARD 20 YEARS.

Apple introduced OS X... a year later Microsoft introduced VISTA (Microsoft's attempt to copy fancy features in OS X). Vista was a flop. MS spent another 3 years trying to fix Vista - which became Windows 7. If Microsoft learns to development & test properly, they CAN make good copycat products.

You compare only "high configuration" PCs with average Macs. To make it fair, compare the high-ends of both platforms. Maybe you don't know that Macs also have a high-end?

You say Macs are "much expensive than the PC counterparts". You compare Macs (all models are high-quality, well configured) to low-cost PCs (poor quality, basic HW). To really know which is better, compare oranges to oranges. A mid- to high-end PC is equivalent to the average Mac. They both cost around $1500. Don't forget to add-in the cost of the OS on the WIndows side. You have to pay/upgrade to the top-end Microsoft OS - which is the only OS comparable to Apple's OS X. Apple sells only one OS (their top-end OS) that EVERY mac gets. You also have to get a PC built by a TOP manufacturer, with high-quality components, fast RAM, HD, high-end graphics. When you put the best stuff in a PC, it's cost easily matches (even surpasses) the cost of an equivalent Mac.

About crashing - I've run tons of apps on both platforms for years and I find the Mac platform much more stable than Windows. If you don't believe me, here's a simple test. Let a Windows PC run for six months straight - never rebooting it (or letting it crash). Do the same with a Mac. I guarantee the Windows PC cannot do this. In my 25 years running both, I've NEVER had a WIndows PC able to do this (most never get past 2 months). I've NEVER had a MAC crash in this test. For this test, you have to keep running mainstream apps daily, on both machines. Never shutdown, and see which can do it. That's a real test of the FULL CAPABILITIES of both systems.

Another example, I can still bootup & run my original Macintosh from 1985. Can't say that about my PC from those years. CAN YOUR MAC & PC DO BETTER?

People who haven't deeply used Apple products can't understand what's so good. It's more than hardware & software. Apple's success is based on strong design. That doesn't mean they can't make mistakes, but theirs are far fewer, and their end-products are far better. In every product-area Apple's ventured, they've been industry INNOVATORS (and leaders). With MS, that's true only for their OS - and they got so by stealing secrets (in the early years) from Apple. MS continued using illegal practices over the years (they were sued by the US & European governments several times, and they lost each time). They resorted to unfair tactics to get where they are. It's easy to have 95% market share by cheating, but cheating won't get you great products FIRST.

To compare both platforms accurately, you must understand their strengths AND weaknesses - by learning their history, how & why they were created, and what markets they cater to. Apple doesn't cater to businesses (they want to - but Microsoft's kept them out using unfair tactics). So they don't have 95% market share. But they DO have 95% marketshare with iPods and now iPads. Their products (given a fair chance, with no unfair competitors) always win.

The funny thing is I have a Macbook Pro which I spent somewhere around $1,200 - $1,300 on when I could have gotten a $700 PC with 10x better specs. Macs and PC have different functions, the Mac is for the more artistic programs I would say and the PC is more for gaming.

    Source(s): I own both. :S

You don't get a Mac for their specs and only use boot camp...you get one for OS X.

If you are not planning of having OS X as your primary operating system, don't buy a Mac

Each to his own. Both platforms have plus and minus points.
