Can somebody help me with Sky box & dish?

Have brought it from a car boot sale and it seems to work. When i put it on it says no satellite signal received. Have got my dish pointed the same way as my neighbours. Has got a sky card & also asks for pin number. How do I know what the pin number is? Have tried the first 4 Digits & the last 4 but doesn't seem to work. What am I doing wrong?! Any help would be grateful

Thanks in advance

Your dish will need to point to an extremely precise direction - millimetres will count here on each XY axis. This is not like a TV aerial where you can just point it roughly in the direction to where your nearest television broadcasting transmitter is situated.

The position of the Astra 2 satellite is 28 degrees east of South. A compass will quickly allow you to see if there are any immediate obstructions in that direction, for example other buildings or large trees. The angle at which the signal hits the dish varies depending on how far South you are, this is because all satellites are positioned above the Southern equator so the farther south you travel the higher the angle for reception is. You should be able to go into the menu of your Sky set top box - and under a specific menu/sub menu you will find a setup section which includes a signal strength meter.

You can align the dish correctly this way, but you will need to be able to see your TV screen when you move the dish very slightly to be able to see the signal strength meter change.

Typically in the UK this angle varies from 20 degrees in the North to 30 degrees in the South.

You may need a qualified satellite installation person to help you out - they will often have a special portable meter that they use to find the optimum strength from the Astra satellites (these transmit the Sky TV companies' signal) in the sky via the correct alignment.

try the default codes aswell as in 1234 or 0000. sounds daft but so often these codes save the day, good luck
