Just got a one month old blue nose pit bull and I need help on food selection for him?

I really love him and I want to take good care of him so he can live a good life, without all the stereotypes you hear about pit bulls. Dogs aren't born bad, it is the owners who make them that way. I want to be a good owner.

Update:

Julie, calm down. The breeder took him away from his mother long before I came around. If you ask me, I saved this little one. The breeder just threw him in a cage with his brothers and sisters and payed no attention to him. Why would I want my puppy going back to that? And it is a terrier pit bull. And I did NOT get him off of craig's list, my new neighbor had them and i bought him on a pleasant whim. Thank u for the advice.

Update 2:

Please, save the lectures. I have the puppy now and his mother is long gone. I just need advice about food selection. That is all. The details I added after the question are just off subject comments and thoughts.

well you can feed him Iams, Pro plan, Science diet or Black and gold. We use black and gold for our pit and he is VERY healthy but the food is not cheap it is usually found at feed stores.

If you want to be a good owner, take him back to his BACK YARD BREEDER. NO good breeder sells a dog at 4 weeks old and no good new owner who seems to care, buys one at this age. I also hate to burst your bubble, but it's not all about how you raise them. YOU CAN'T CHANGE GENETICS! A Pit Bull is NOT a breed and nose color is only a color. Either you have an American Pit Bull Terrier that is registered with the UKC, or you don't. I probably won't be the most popular answerer but I don't care. Most people on this site only want the answer they want to hear, not the truth. Your pup should have been with it's breeder until at LEAST 8 weeks old. The breeder should have been responsible for at LEAST one vaccination and worming. Don't tell me....this was a Craigslist or Kijiji pup, right?

Well your question and your additional details are completely different...

First of all, you should not have a 1 month old puppy. It should be with its mother still.

You're right that pit bulls can be made into very friendly and loyal companions if trained properly. Obedience classes would be great to socialize and train your pup.

As far as food.. do some research. Ask your vet. Go to www.dogfoodadvisor.com or www.dogfoodanalysis.com. Look for a grain-free food with no dyes, a meat (chicken, lamb, venison, etc.) as the first ingredient. Some recommendations: Taste of the Wild, Acana, Orijen, Natural Balance.. Lower end of the price spectrum: Diamond Naturals Chicken & Rice, Kirkland Chicken & Rice.

    Good luck with your pup.

Actually behavior is rooted just as much in the genetics as it is the environment the dog is raised in. Pit bulls are some of the worst dogs for genetic behavior(produced by poor breeding programs)problems. So its not just bad owners as you claim. That is an ignorant statement. Pits are a useless breed in imoa. Has the pup already been weaned off it's mother? He still needs some milk while being transitioned to a quality puppy food.

Pups should be left with their mother until they are at least 8 weeks old. Try feeding her very small meals numerous times a day. Add a little full fat plain yogurt to her food for 2-3 of the feedings. Do NOT give her oils, animal fat or other pure fat sources in an attempt to add weight. Try giving her a scrambled egg, soft cooked, once a day. Make sure you are feeding a good quality puppy food and following the feeding instructions. Make sure she has her own dish and don't let her brother eat any of her food. Closely watch them at feeding time, stop any food aggression or bullying while they are still young. If you do not have enough money for a vet you really should rethink having 2 puppies. Please make sure you make money in your budget to get them regular check up and keep their shots up to date!
