metal container for a planter?

I have a decorative metal container which I would like to use as a planter. I would like to drill some holes in the bottom to allow water to drain out, but is there anything else I should use below the dirt so that it won't retain too much moisture?

I use styrofoam peanuts/packing chips in my planter to reduce weight and to prevent moisture retention and resulting root rot.

Honestly, I would put another pot inside the metal container otherwise it will likely rust after a year or two. But, you should put some rocks below the dirt whether you use just the metal container or something else in it.
