What car would work for me?

I'm looking at buying my first car, but I know virtually nothing about them. I know how they work but when it comes to brands or types I'm pretty much lost... The things I know that I will need in a car are...

- Good Gas mileage

- cheap

- room, I do a lot of activities, and I need it to be able to hold bikes/kayaks/assortments of other stuff (whether or not this is inside the car, or being large enough for a rack)

- four wheel drive most likely, I live in the mountains and our winters can be harsh.

- safety, a no-brainer

These are the things I will need in a car, but some more things I would prefer are...

- good sound quality, I love my music!

- not to large or bulky, I don't want a big SUV for multiple reasons...

- seats that fold down, I'm sure I'll end up sleeping in it at some-time

- Higher off the ground! Some off the back-roads I frequent can be rugged, so I don't want the bottom of it scraping every time I hit a bump...

If there's anything I've missed, please add it in! I am a very active person, so I don't want to make a decision, then realize that I've screwed myself over! Also, I will most likely end up buying it used, so whats a good average mileage on a car?

Thanks!
