What steps do I need to take to become a firefighter?
I am currently 16 years old. I want to become a firefighter (preferably in NYC, I live in CT right now) and was just wondering what steps need to be taken to become a firefighter? Steps like a fire academy, exams, age requirements?

The competition to become a paid, big-city firefighter is fierce. But getting a position as a small-town volunteer firefighter is as easy as walking in and applying.

Be aware that most "fire department" work nowadays is EMT and paramedic calls. Smoke alarms and stricter building codes have made building fires less common.

Start by talking to the fire department near you, if they're volunteer start with them. The best thing is experience over years of schooling. After that get input directly from firefighters in NYC, they can give you more information then any website!

It relies upon on the position you elect to artwork. when you're west, get your Paramedic first, a large variety of smaller departments employ purely Paramedics to be firefighters. you ought to envision with each branch to boot. In some departments you first get employed as a firefighter and growing a paramedic is a promotion with the help of their paramedic software. keep in concepts too: that is a lot a lot less puzzling to develop right into a paramedic than that is to get employed as a firefighter.
