outboard water pump replacement?
When buying a new impeller or water pump replacement kit, does it have to match the exact model of the outboard (in terms of functionality and size)? I have a 1997 5hp Mercury Force outboard that may need work on the water pump. Should I be looking for a specific size impeller/repair kit? And does it have to be made by Force or Mercury? The outboard instruction manual does not get that detailed.
Thanks!

Unfortunately you need the specific one for your specific model, they are a very fine fit in all dimensions, and they cannot be too tight, or too loose. You may have some difficulty in finding this part, as already mentioned this series appear to be defunct, and the parts are listed as obsolete. You will need to contact Force and Mercury dealers to try to find the part, and buy at least a couple if you find them.

You definately need to get a kit specifically for the '97 force 5 hp.
If the impeller is more than 2 years old, it's time to replace it. Don't wait till it fails, then it's too late.
