The Haunting (1963) - a classic film about a haunted house. This film achieves a spooky atmosphere and some good chills with no gore or fancy special effects. An intelligent, psychological horror movie. Best watched late at night with the lights off. Avoid the abysmal 1999 remake at all cost.

The Changeling (1980) - another haunted house film. This one has an big, ancient house with a dark and mysterious past. It's a good film that provides some great chills. Stars George C. Scott.

Ghost Story (1981) - a good spook-fest. Good story with a tragic background. Based on the Peter Straub novel of the same name. Stars Fred Astaire, Melvyn Douglas, Douglas Fairbanks Jr. and John Houseman.

The Entity (1981) - Based on a reportedly true story about a single mother who is repeatedly attacked and terrorized by an malevolent invisible presence. Pretty scary - especially late at night. Stars Barbara Hershey.

The Thing (1982) - one of John Carpenter's best. As another person already stated, this is a great film about paranoia, survival and cosmic horror. One of my favorite horror films of all time. A pretty faithful adaptation of the novella Who Goes There? by John W. Campbell, Jr.

The Exorcist 3 (1990) - starring George C. Scott, this is a genuinely creepy and disturbing film. Simply ignore the fact that it's supposed to be a sequel as its story stands on its own and has only minimal connection to the original.

The Ring (2002) - I first watched this film on cable late one night, alone and... it was pretty frickin' scary. Great build up, atmosphere and creepy back story. If you haven't seen it yet, check it out.

Well, that's all I can think of off the top of my head - and I have to get back to work. ;-)

Being a horror movie buff, I'd recommend John Carpenter's The Thing. It's a psychological thriller about a group of researchers cut off in Antarctica, dealing with a shape shifting alien who wants to kill them all.
