I have an old old computer that i was trying to update the service pack on and when i did it i restarted my computer and the blue screen came up. Is there anyway that in safe mode for xp I can transfer my files that i have on there to a usb flash drive or cd without having to install anything. these files are important so i can not loose them. Use a Linux LiveCD, to explore and transfer your files from the hard drive. Booting with a LiveCD is also a good way to determine if the blue screen created by the Microsoft operating system, or your hardware.

You could also remove the hard drive and attache it as a slave drive to another computer. Using a USB 2.0 enclosure, or attache it as the second drive in another tower. have your neighbor, co-worker, or computer geek friend help you with the backup to removal media, Flash media stick, or another hard drive or partition...
