"Georgia's Harsh Immigration Law Costs Millions in Unharvested Crops

[Adam Ozimek]

Jay Bookman provides some unsurprising news about Georgia's illegal immigration crackdown: there are unintended, negative consequences.

After enacting House Bill 87, a law designed to drive illegal immigrants out of Georgia, state officials appear shocked to discover that HB 87 is, well, driving a lot of illegal immigrants out of Georgia...

Thanks to the resulting labor shortage, Georgia farmers have been forced to leave millions of dollars' worth of blueberries, onions, melons and other crops unharvested and rotting in the fields. It has also put state officials into something of a panic at the damage they've done to Georgia's largest industry...."

For years and years, the agricultural sector of Georgia, as well as the rest of the United States, cheated the American People with farm subsides and illegal aliens as workers. Before the illegal aliens came to town, the United Farm Workers were supplying the people, and things were fine. But the United Farm Workers wanted decent working conditions, and decent wages. The Agricultural Businesses refused to do that.. hired illegal aliens, and now, and finally, they are being forced to obey the law.

Did anyone want those crops to go unharvested? No. Did the Agricultural sector think that law would be enforced, or that the people were fed up? No.

They know now, don't they. They better start looking for a group that will supply them with legal labor, or go to the Human Resources Division. Further, they better clean up the working conditions, and pay decent wages. And this is the way it should have been from the very beginning.. not just today.

On point America. Those folks could and did collect state welfare provided seasonal workers. They sent that money home. That money can go to the American Workers, and that money will stay home.

Are you ever astonished at the stupidity of some of the answers you receive? My particular favorite--as it happens to me all the time--are the ones who refuse to listen to facts because they don't like the magazine or newspaper or network you use to supply the facts. Are they really so dumb that they can't open a link from Mother Jones or the New York Times, read it and decide for themselves? Or does everything in their lives have to come from Fox?

The sad fact is, that although they b*tch and complain, very few Americans will actually go out and take these jobs left behind. They love to scream "they are taking our jobs", well now they have a chance to get some of those jobs back. How many do you think have stepped into the vacancies? None. Or else the crops would not be going bad in the fields.

It was the same thing with the "take our jobs" campaign a couple of yrs ago. Only 3 Americans actually applied for these agriculture positions.

The lack of workers will mean a dramatic increase in food prices. People will complain and find someone else to point the fault towards.

The far majority of people favor deporting illegal aliens. Fruit and vegetable prices going up is nothing but a rumor. The same was said about Arizona and it never happened.

There are plenty of people that can pick those crops. And the bill was passed by both parties.

It's their state, their business, they are ILLEGAL, and I am happy. It's a start.

What do you expect? IT'S GEORGIA! They resent having to pay ANYONE to work in their fields.
