Insurance for your horse? Do you have it?
Is your horse insured? Is it worth it? I am looking into insuring my horses with Equisure, just in case of an emergency.
Which plan would you choose?:
1. $7,500 limit with $300 deductible............ $300 annual premium
2. $10,000 limit with $500 deductible...........$300 annual premium
3. $15,000 limit with $500 deductible...........$450 annual premium
I was thinking the $10,000 limit with $500 deductible with a $300 annual premium. Can you tell me your opinion on insuring horses and which one you would choose and why. Thank you.

I have had insurance on my horse before but do not now. I insured when I had him in training and going to shows. With him at home, I don't keep insurance on him. I guess it depends on the money you have invested, how much risk you feel is involved, and if the annual cost justifies the risk.... Also, if I were going to insure my horse again, I would again get the policy with major medical. The amount you insure for should equal what you paid for him or his value...I remember them asking me for proof of that...they don't just insure any horse for a high value.

I have my horses insured, but didn't do that until seeing the vet bill after losing my 2nd horse to colic. I have major medical and mortality on my horses. The amount you pay should reflect the value of the horse and what is most affordable for you.

All our barrel horses are insured. And I most definitely agree with insuring because of something happens for your horse you know your butt will be covered if your horse needs surgery or anything. I dot care how much it costs I want to make sure my horse is covered.
And it depends on what you do with your horse...if you compete I would insure him/her for more as your doing alot more with them. But if you just pleasure ride and don't do much I would go with a lower range.

Yes my boy is insured, partially because he is rather accident prone + due to some of the work I do with him its just common sense (jousting, showing, jumping, dressage, x-country, hacking - bit of everything really).
+ I'd go for option 2.

Unless you're rich or you have a very valuable horse, it's not worth it IMO.
My horse used to be insured (back before we were poor), but when he turned 16 we canceled it. Insurance skyrockets when a horse hits a certain age.
