  • How to tell if you have a broken toe?

My horse stood on my foot about 10am today and I'm still limping now :/

Toe is nicely swollen, lots of bruises, and despite my having not moved it for the last hour still hunts.

If it is broken how long should it take to heal (roughly), and what should I do?... unfortunately can't really rest it during the day seeing as I work on a livery yard and spend the day on my feet constantly on the move.

  • How long to wait before rugging up after colic surgery?

To anyone who has had a horse who has had colic surgery.

How long after the surgery was it before your horse left you rug them up again?

It has now been almost 2 months since my horse had his surgery, stitches are out, and he will let me brush his belly all over once again. But when it comes to rugs he is still very sensitive and when the belly straps touch his he will kick at them as if trying to get flies off him.

  • What would you do (20 characters)?

When I got my cob a year ago he had awful mites, they were treated and he is now fine.

The cob stabled next to my cob clearly is suffering from awful mites! constantly itching/biting his legs and stamping his hooves.

Over the last couple of days I have noticed my boy has started itching his legs more and more and I'm worried he is getting them again from the cob next door.

I have mentioned it to the yard owner who spoke to the other cobs owner but she insists he is fine & won't do anything about it.

    So any idea's?...

  • Sun Bleached Black Horse?

Is there anyway to stop my horses black forelock & feathers from becoming sun bleached this summer? Last summer his forelock went red! and the tips of his feathers were going ginger... I'm going to be showing his in the traditional cob classes this year so would prefer his forelock & feathers to stay black... the rest of his mane stayed the right colour as had a fly rug on x

  • A few questions about horse buying.?

    1. Is there any breed of horse you would not buy? (Know some people won't buy a certain breed because of having a bad reputation, like my friend will not buy a TB or Arab as she thinks they are all crazy/speed freaks).

    2. When going to view a horse how important is the horses/yards/sells presentation to you (as in tidy/clean it is...)

    3. Would you prefer if the horse you were buying came with or without tack/rug?

    4. Would you ever buy from a dealer? (a reputable dealer that is)

    5. What is your favorite thing to do when riding? (jumping/hacking/schooling...)

    6. When buying a horse what is most important to you? (such as price/height/age/location/temperament...)

Thankyou for all answers, need them for some college work I'm currently doing x

  • how much should I ask for?

How much should I ask for my old Lovatt & Ricketts Black Leather GP Saddle, wide 17". In good condition, not sure of age as it came with my horse. I looked on ebay and they seem to be anywhere between £65 - 300, so a bit unsure what to ask for.

  • How much is he worth now?

I asked this question a few months ago and it was a matter of you'd be lucky to get £1000. So curious after all my work what do you think he'd be worth now? btw he will NEVER be for sale, just curious :)

He is a Black 15hh 9 year old gypsy vanner.

Schooling well: works in a nice outline, good transitions, currently working on leg yielding & flying changes - he is getting the hag of flying changes very well.

Jumps a 70cm course quite easily, and has done individual jumps of up to 3ft height x 3ft wide.

Hacks reasonably well in a group, can get a bit excited. Not spooked by anything when hacking on the roads, but occasionally see invisible monsters when off road. He recently did his first hack alone and was perfectly behaved, seems to hack better alone.

Took him to his first show over the summer and was 100%, was quite a big show with lots going on. He came 6th, judges comments were that he should have been 1st or 2nd but the individual show wasn't polished enough (totally my fault forgot the routine so had to make it up).

Goes on/off box no problem, great to clip (fidgets a bit with his ears but fine if you twitch whilst doing them). Great with the vet, doesn't even notice injections... Usually ok with the farrier, he is still getting used to have shoes put on so can be a bit silly. Not sure what he is like with dentist without sedative, he's sedated for it just because he is so big & strong all he'd have to do is move and he could knock someone out if hit them.

Has a extremely small splint that doesn't both him at all.

Erm think that's all the info... :)

  • What rug to use? (20 characters)?

Clipping my horse tomorrow (hunter clip, everything off except legs) so what rug do you think I should use that night, got long neck fleece / 100g standard neck rug / 250g standard neck rug / 360g full neck rug, can't decide what rug or combination would be best. He's a shire x gypsy vanner and according to weather it's going to be 8C.

  • Stuck for character names?

I'm really stuck for character names for the 2 main characters. One if a female about 24 she is the overall main character, she is a mortal who die's in the end. The other is a male between 25-28, he is (well I suppose the easiest way to explain it would be) an 'angel' who falls for the female, only for him to not be able to save her.... not in this life anyway ;) any idea's greatly appreciated
