    Rough or uncut is just fine. A cabochon IS cut and polished, it does not have the small, flat facets but is cut with a dome shaped top and is often used for the less transparent stones where the colour is of greater importance than the transparency.

    You got it right. It is called a rough or uncut gem.

    ex: an uncut diamond
