I think the best toppings for potatoes are bacon bits, chives, butter, sour cream and grated cheddar cheese. Potatoes are fat free and need fat to make them taste good. You could use reduced calorie sour cream and cheese on them to make them less high calorie. I've had potatoes topped with cooked broccoli and cheese and it was pretty good. Sauteed onion and mushrooms and are alright on potatoes with a little butter or margarine. I saw some commerical on TV where people were topping their potatoes with salsa and I tried it--I didn't think it the best tasting thing in the world but you might like it, and salsa has vitamin C and no fat.

If you are doing double (twice) baked potatoes, mix the scooped out mash and mix in some raw onion. Re-stuff and bake for a further 10-15 minutes.
The onion will soften but still have a good taste.
Another alternative is to make an X in the top and squeeze it a little and pour in some garlic butter.

Or cut up broccoli bits and melted cheese

mmmm potatoes
idea 1: leftover bolognese and parmesan/mozarella. The BEST way to eat bolognese.
idea 2: avocado slices and sour cream (or greek yoghurt, tastes almost the same and is much healthier)
idea 3: caramelised onions (only use olive oil though) and tomato chutney with lots of black pepper
Source(s): grew up near a lot of potato farms =) - Trish ThomasLv 710 years ago
