Caffeine and weight loss?

About six months ago I started drinking coffee, never used to. I also upped my intake of energy drinks because I got a payrise so could afford them. I also lost around 5kg, but unsure why because I wasn't eating or exercising any differently. After I told my auntie she asked me if I had been drinking more caffeine than usual because caffeine increases metabolism. Is this true?

    It is possible that you consumed extra calories from snacks which you replaced with coffee. Doctors often try stimulants such as amphetamines on obese people to see if they help curb neurotic over eating. However, chances are the coffee had very little to do with your weight loss or your metabolism. It's possible you lost a small amount of water weight owing to the diuretic effects of caffeine.

    Metabolism is nothing more than the totality of the energy exchange processes which occur in the body. Metabolic rates are an effect and not a cause. Hence, the idea that you can change your metabolic rate to achieve a specific effect, such as changing the thermostat in your house to effect the temperature, is wrong.

    For example, you can exercise to burn fat and that demand will increase the metabolic rate and, depending on your caloric intake, may burn body fat. However, you cannot increase your metabolic rate permanently with exercise because as soon as you stop the exercising your metabolism will begin to return to normal. That's why we all have a BMR or basal metabolic rate and it is not something we can change. It may change as a function of aging or post pubescent development but those are the result of natural processes and genetics.

    There are naturally heavy people (endomorphs) and naturally thin people (ectomorphs) and that happy medium in between, the much envied mesomorph. If there was a way to change our BMR, we would all be mesomorphs.

    You will hear many people talk about metabolism as though it can be modified to help you lose fat or gain weight and you would do well to ignore that sort of talk. Such things as diet, fat loss or gain, increases in muscularity, etc. do not translate to significant changes in metabolism. A little bit of knowledge is often worse than none. Those who do not fully understand metabolism often turn qualitative truisms into quantitative absolutes and that can be extremely misleading.

    It makes no more sense to think about your metabolism in regard to diet or exercise than it does to think about your car's horsepower when pressing on the gas pedal to go or the brake pedal to stop. Metabolism is an effect just as your car's horsepower is an effect. If you're concerned with losing fat, gaining weight, building muscle, or maintaining, follow good diet, exercise, and fitness strategies and your metabolism will take care of itself.

    Yes, to a point. However, ultimately it will inhibit your ability to lose weight and cause you to gain weight. It ups your energy but then you crash (like a sugar high). Read anything on weight loss and it will tell you that caffeine will cause you to keep weight on. Be careful, plus it's an addiction and gives many more complications.

    Hi Poppy! According to the South Beach Diet books, caffeine can mess with the way in which your frame handles sugar. If you may have an excessive amount of caffeine, your insulin stages can spike, on the way to have an effect on the way in which you procedure meals and may end up in keeping weight, if no longer gaining. I misplaced 20 kilos at the SB vitamin and won all of it again :( Part of the intent is when you consider that I simply love carbs, and the opposite side is I love espresso & booze, that you must attempt to preclude. Lol! Looks like I have horrible conduct! Hope this is helping :)

    Caffeine doesn't increase your metabolism. Caffeine just makes you slightly less hungry.

    No caffeine has no effect on your metabolism, or we'd all be thin, it just makes you slightly more active and lessens your hunger pangs. Coffee was part of my body building diet years ago.
