Non-Religious: Atheist or Skeptic. Which are you?

If you are not religious, which are you really:

ATHEIST: one who denies the existence of a deity or of divine beings.

SKEPTIC: doubts and is critical of all accepted doctrines and creeds.

In other words, are you open to the possibility that there is a God, or do you completely deny even the possibility of the existence of God?

The definitions are directly from dictionary.com. I am not making them up.

    Skeptic

deffinition of Atheist is a person who denies or disbelieves the existence of a supreme being or beings.

if someone matches that deffinition exactly i consider that as almost the same as a religion

I do not believe that a god exists. This is not a denial which implies somethign rather different. Are you open to the possiblity of the Flying Spaghetti monster or do you completely deny his existence? It just isn't reasonabel to make up something for which no evidence exists and then start saying people should be open to the existence of that thing .

We, the First Presidency and the Council of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, solemnly proclaim that marriage between a man and a woman is ordained of God and that the family is central to the Creator's plan for the eternal destiny of His children.

All human beings—male and female—are created in the image of God. Each is a beloved spirit son or daughter of heavenly parents, and, as such, each has a divine nature and destiny. Gender is an essential characteristic of individual premortal, mortal, and eternal identity and purpose.

In the premortal realm, spirit sons and daughters knew and worshiped God as their Eternal Father and accepted His plan by which His children could obtain a physical body and gain earthly experience to progress toward perfection and ultimately realize his or her divine destiny as an heir of eternal life. The divine plan of happiness enables family relationships to be perpetuated beyond the grave. Sacred ordinances and covenants available in holy temples make it possible for individuals to return to the presence of God and for families to be united eternally.

    Both.

You can be an atheist and a skeptic. Easily. Also, your definition of atheism is incorrect my friend. People who are "open to the possibility" are more closely termed Agnostics.

You've listed one of the possible definitions of the word "atheist" but not the one which fits my lack of belief in gods. Bring some valid evidence for god(s) and I will accept they exist. In the meantime, I remain in the default position, which is a lack of belief - a-theist. Compare leprechauns, fairies, thousands of gods in human history.

Source(s): I am also a skeptic, so warm fuzzy feelings, anecdotal stories, and old books don't do it for me. "The definitions are directly from dictionary.com. I am not making them up." Atheist –noun a person who denies or disbelieves the existence of a supreme being or beings. See that "or disbelieves"? Are you a creationist? Because partial quotes and quote-mining seems to come naturally to that type of intellectually dishonest shitsack.

I believe the correct terms are "gnostic atheist" and "agnostic atheist". Those who don't accept the possibility of a god and those who do.

I'm pretty sure most of us are agnostic atheists because we recognize that no matter how silly these religions are, there's still an infinitesimal chance they're right.

You got the definition of an atheist wrong. It's someone who doesn't believe in God, they don't deny a god. Being in denial would mean that you're just refusing to see the God, which is probably what you think but it's untrue.

Yeah umm skeptic is a critical almost "mocking" word. It's more Agnostic your lookin for and that's what I am.
