How do you calculate daily intake of calories?

I'm quite curious as to how people pop up very random numbers when I was taught a very clear, simple and reliable system, the Harris Benedict Equation.

Update:

@Finding Fitness

What system do you use then?

As for reliability, Benedict's equation isn't that far off to be used as a guideline.

    The Harris Benedict Equation is just like all the other equations. They are an approximation based on height and weight and do not take body composition into account.

    The only reliable method for determining your Basal or resting metabolic rate is through the use of a calorimeter.This is a device used for calorimetry, the science of measuring the heat of chemical reactions or physical changes as well as heat capacity.

    All equations are impersonal and inaccurate and serve only as a general guideline.

    Other formulas commonly used are the Katch-McArdle Formula and the Cunningham Formula. The Harris Benedict forumla (in my opinion) over estimates caloric needs.

    NOTE

    If I wanted an accurate measurement, I would actually have a calorimeter test done. Most schools and some fitness centers will have these available and a reading can be done for about $20-30 dollars. Otherwise, I simply pay attention to my intake and not count at all. If my waist line is expanding, I know I need to increase activity or decrease intake.

    If I was to use the Harrison Benedict equation, I will typically go about 20% below. This is actually in line with a study called CALERIE. This is a study being conducted by several facilities that all seem to agree that we have overestimated caloric consumption by as much as 20-25%.
