Sending mail from US to UK?

I'm American and I have a friend in England and I want to send him a letter. I have a few questions though.

1) Do I use a regular envelope or AirMail envelope? I have some old Airmail envelopes so I don't have a limited access to them.

2) Is it okay to send money? I just want to send him one US dollar and possibly a quarter as souvenirs.

3) How much would it cost to send it to England?

4) Do I need stamps? If so what kind and how many?

That's all, hope I can have these answered ASAP. I'm sorry if some of those questions are stupid ones, this is the first time I'm sending international mail and I very rarely send letters inside the US as well.

Thanks (:

    1) You can use either. Since how much postage is charged depends on the weight of the letter, international mail usually is sent in light air mail envelopes. But it isn't a requirement.

    2) It's legal to send money (cash). People are advised not to do so since it increases the chance of its being stolen along the way. Coins will greatly add to the postage costs, and if they aren't secured there is a chance they would tear a hole in the envelope (especially an air mail envelope) and fall out. The other problem with sending cash is that you cannot later prove you have made a payment. (This does not apply in this case. I suggest you send the one-dollar bill hidden between the leaves of the folded letter. I doubt it will be stolen or lost).

3 & 4) Yes, you need stamps. I don't know the current cost, and it depends on weight. I would guess that if you sent a one-page letter and a one-dollar bill inside an airmail envelope, you would pay less than US$1.00. Certainly less than two. Go to the Post Office and ask.

By the way, allow three weeks for delivery. For about $10 you can get overnight delivery.
