My favourite board games are:
chess, checkers, backgammon, monopoly, and scrabble.
Also have a deck of cards. Life is good. Easy Money is better.

Not sure if you would consider it a board game (depending on your definition) but Dominion is definitively one of the best game.
Another good one, if you want to try something different from monopoly and co is Carcasone.
