Red Star makes a good variety. You can find it online at Amazon.com or in some grocery stores (Raley's) or natural food stores.

Nutritional yeast is different than brewers yeast.

Supplement when necessary. Vegetarian Times recommends supplementing a lacto-ovo vegetarian diet with vitamin B-12. You can take B-12 pills or find cereals fortified with vitamin B-12. Soy products such as tofu and soy milk are fortified with B-12.

Nutritional yeast, available at natural foods stores, to add cheeselike flavor, and nuts to this tasty vegetable combo. Nutritional yeast is a wonderful source of protein and B-vitamins.

Nutritional yeast is a pure strain of yeast that adds a cheesy and nutty flavor to vegan dishes. It’s also a source of protein, providing essential amino acids and B-vitamins. (The fortified Red Star brand contains vitamin B-12.) It’s available in the condiment section and/or the bulk section of natural foods stores. Stored in a cool dry place or the refrigerator or freezer, it will last for months.

Check Whole Foods or some other expensive food store.

Jack Norris, VeganHealth.org, says to be very careful about depending on yeast for your B12 requirements. Sometimes they put the wrong yeast in the big bins and you think you're getting fortified yeast but you're not. And the B12 is weakened by light. If the bins are exposed to light for a period of time, the B12 might not be strong enough to work for you. Read the label of any food before you ASSUME it contains B12. Norris recommends a pill for B12. Quick, clean and reliable.

There are only two brands of yeast that contain B12 and, unless it's very recent, no brewer's yeast. Why would they put B12 in brewer's yeast?

So, the first time I had nutritional yeast it was in this macaroni and "cheese" stuff, with the nutritional yeast posing as the cheese. It was disgusting. But then, my mom, forgetting that I didn't like them, got some. I put them on my scrambled tofu and on one other thing that I forgot, and it was really good!! I've been trying to use them in more recipes recently, because of the unique flavor.

Well, you don't need nutritional yeast for your B vitamins, not by a long shot, but it's definitely tasty to add to your meals. Get yours at stores that sell healthier, organic items and items in bulk, like Whole Foods.

If you only want b vitamins and don't want it for the flavor, you should have a multivitamin. It gives you much more vitamins. And the one a day ones are made with soy, strictly vegan.
