Mostly when you say ad hoc, that could be as simple as taking a RJ-45 (ethernet cable) and connecting the cable between two computers, which is a peer-to-peer connection. This is done in the same sense with wireless but with the same channel and frequency that both computers are listening in on. It depends if the connection is transmitting over a wire like ethernet, or if its wireless, 802.11a or something. The Ad hoc option is found in the start>control panel>network and Internet if using MICROSOFT. Then right click your adapter. Now this adapter could be wireless like a intel pro set, atheros, belkin or a RJ45 port connection for wired like VIA.
