Can I have people parking on the street in front of my driveway towed?

People park on the street in front of my driveway in such a manner that it blocks me from coming or going. There is no curb anywhere on the street, and they park right where my driveway meets the road. Is it within my rights to have them towed, or is there another way to go about preventing this from happening?

certainly not going to argue with billy bob. can't top those credentials, but he didn't elaborate. say you do call a tow truck. you willing to pay for it? is it the same car all the time? do you happen to know whose car it is? where the owner lives? a neighbor perhaps? if so, talk to them first. if you don't know whose car it is, i would say call the police. they will be able to find out whose car it is. i would think they would also be able to see to it that the owner of the car is the one who gets the towing bill/storage fee. as frustrating as it must be, you could be letting yourself in for some retribution if you take matters into your own hands. as for getting some type of no parking designation for the end of your driveway, i would say check with the city government.

Sure you can. In most places you have to call the police, and not the tow company directly.

There's lots of other things you can do too. Some are nicer or easier than others:

Politely ask them to move and stop parking there.

Put up a sign "Do not block driveway".

Park on the street so it's a non-issue.

If it's a safety issue, like if the Fire Department can't access your property, call the PD. There may be some regulation in place where they could be fined or your street could be better monitored.

Go to your city council and ask for stricter parking regulations.

Form an HOA and have the HOA privatize the street, make parking rules, or put up a gate. This one is a little far fetched, but it does happen all the time.

Call the local Police "non emergency phone number " ask to speak to a SGT, and explain your problem, and request a officer to come and tag the car, and have THEM tow it away. Most municipalities have a parking by- law, the covers this type of offence.

Call your local police department before you call a tow truck, it would be better for them to make the call. If you initiate the action, and the vehicle is damaged, you could end up on the wrong end of a lawsuit.

    Yes..

Source(s): I am a retired police officer. I retired as a sergeant, after 29 years, from a very large department, about 12,000 officers. I was a patrol officer for 4 years in a very diverse area. I was a tactical officer in the high rise project areas of my city. We called it vertical patrol in that we walked the the stairways of the high rises most of the time. I did that for 5 years and was promoted by test to detective. I worked violent crime (homicide, sex, officer involved shootings, robbery, kidnapping, serious non property incidents) for 11 years until I was promoted to sergeant. I worked as a street supervisor, a bicycle patrol supervisor and a desk sergeant/watch commander. During my time as a tactical officer and a detective I was a unit representative for the police union. I have a B.A in English and an M.S. in Law Enforcement Administration..
