Maximising performance on home desktop computer...?

Question

A friend has a Dell Dimension 5150 computer (quite old?), with an 80GB hard drive, which is nearly 3/4 full. He has now bought an external hard drive, 1 terrabyte, and wants to free up as much space as possible by moving files to the new drive, leaving the original to perform as quickly as possible. Other than moving all his Itunes files, and his photos, what else can he do to clear things up to make it work as effectively as possible?

If you can't be bothered to type the stages required, but can post a link to a set of simple instructions that might help, then please do. Thanks for your help.

I put a link in the source box but I would just like to say DO NOT format the drive to NTFS if it is in FAT32. If it is already in NTFS then ok. The reason for this is that FAT32 is the more commonly used setup and the slightest error in backing up and converting to NTFS can cause a loss of all your data.    Secondly DO NOT go into the services section unless you know how to handle it as some things are required for your pc to work and disrupting them can cause major if not fatal damage to your pc. If you intend to perform these operations then I recommend you back up your computer into a file on your external hard drive and back up service and registry settings (you should find steps on how to do this easily enough on the Internet) good luck and I hope this helps. And for a quick bit of my own advice: go into my computer. Right click on your local disc c. Perform disk cleanup and tick the nessecary boxes. None of them soil cause damage to your pc if removed. This just deletes empty folders and empties recycle bin etc. Then perform disk defragmentation. I recommend performing these before Backing up and following the steps in the we site
