Is it me or Tide/Cheer/Gain/Era HE liquid detergents are notorious at rinsing?
I used these detergents in my standard topload washer. These HE detergents rinsed poorly and left a moldy smell in my washer and laundry.

Try 1 cup of vinegar in the washing machine to clean it out. It should work. Also you can put 1 cup of bleach, it works really well. My trick
on my washer.
IMPORTANT: You need to leave the lid open when not in use.
I would get a new detergent. Try a green one like Ivory,
Arm and Hammer (baking soda). Also put half cup of
baking soda too. Baking soda is a odoring fighting solution.
Baking soda, vinegar.
I like the Tide, and Blue Cheer. Rotate your
detergents. You will be happier.
Also you can rub it down with a lemon.
I love the tango Gain detergent, it is really nice.
It did not do that to my washing machine.
I do change detergents all the time.
It is good to so. It has to do with ph balance
in the washing machine. Your laundry will
look good and brightner.
The other product is borax, it is for odors too.

it may not be the detergent....try doing a small handwas on a sock or bra that does not have a modly smell to it so you will no if the detergent leaves it behing instead of the detergent not getting it out....do it per the hand wash instructions and if it smells moldy it may be the detergent or it may be the water...if it doesn't then it may be your machine and you can simply wash your washing machine....how i do mine is i use the hottest cycle on the largest load (for me it is hot was warm rise) once there is a lot of water i pour in some bleach i don't measure but a little more then i would use for my whites and baking soda or if i don't have bleach vinegar (a cup or two about i don't measure) and baking soda i use the water (with bleach or vinegar) and a cleaning wash cloth (i turn the machine off for this part) and i wipe clean between the part that holds the water and the top of the machine case (needs to be off if it starts to spin with your hand in there you risk injury) sorry for the poor explination but water and gunk and dust builds up there and it is good to just get it off (won't hurt the maching being there but may have a bit of a smell if there is a lot of dust or lint) also wipe down the outside and under around the top loading door and let the cycle run as usual then i just toss the now gunky dirty washcloth into the was close the lid and walk away....(it takes me about 5-10 minutes) my hubby does landscaping so it gets dirty faster then normal washes (i do this maybe once a month of if the washer smells) during the summer and dry months but every couple of weeks during the rainy season (gets dirtier then because of the thicker layer of dirt on hubbys clothes) or as needed now if the clothes have that smell maybe turn on extra rinse cycle (i have to turn my machine to rinse manually) but if the clothes become well rinsed and still have the smell add some vinegar to the wash cycle (it will not hurt your clothes) and it will help i have done this when i have forgotten clothes in the machine and does work and they don't smell like vinegar...i then use a strong fabric softner and dryer sheets. if you don't have an HE machine there is no real benifit to using the HE detergent......you could use less detergent or go to one wash size bigger to help with the rinsing.....or try a powdered detergent (if it is compatable with your machine)
EDIT: i have talked to others if you use an HE detergent in a non HE machine then yes the detergent will leave a residue and funky smell to your clothes if you do not have an HE machine don't use a HE detergent those detergents are manufactured to be used in less water and in a entierly differnt kind of machine and stlye of wash
Source(s): i have used most of those detergents but not the HE versions (except for gain because to me it smells like thick dust to me kind of musky, the original version anyway)...i agree don't like smell of gain
