Companies rarely used to do complete background checks on their employees. It was expensive and not that important. But the data has been getting better and more accessable and the Immigration laws and Patriot Act have made employers more careful. Welcome to the 21st century where there are many firms which do this cheaply. You need to see if you can get that misdemeanor expunged, and you need do bring it up before you apply for the job.

Probably because the other companies didn't do a thorough background on you. Its not hard to find out that information. Also, it could be the nature of your crime.

It is illegal in the US to use your criminal history against you. What they can use it for is to judge your charecter for employment. For example, if you had a theft charge they could say that leaving you unsupervised around money would not be a good thing and deny you employment.

Federal law governs how pre employment checks are done.

Different companies have different standards. And 7-eleven is NOT a "small company", even if you did apply for a small position.
