is it a weed EATER or weed WHACKER?

me and my fiance disagree on whether the thing you edge your grass with is called a weed eater or a weed whacker. i was raised in new jersey and we all call it a weed whacker, he was raised in georgia and he grew up calling to a weed eater. WHICH IS RIGHT?!?!

Update:

he says "it eates the weeds and spits them out" i say it whacks the weeds, not eats them!"

this is such a funny disagreement. haha.

thank you sofa king chill [sorry if thats a little off, cant really remember exactly what your name is right now. lol.

This old, I know, I know, but I got here via an argument last night, so the answer is for anyone who turns up here via Google like me.

The guy who invented it called it a "weed eater." I lived on the east coast for 15 years where I never heard anyone call it anything but a "weed whacker." When I fetched up in the UK I was surprised that it's called a "strimmer" (from "grass trimmer"). I've just discovered that Aussies call them "whipper-snippers." I'd say, "when in Rome do as the Romans" if you wish to make yourself understood.

Weed Eater is the name of the first string trimmer that was produced. The original inventor just died in the last week or so.

Weed Wacker is a generic term for a string trimmer.

Weed Eater is the name of a specific product by a manufacturer. See the first URL below. WeedWacker (not WH) is a generic term for all such machines. See the second URL.

This is called dialect and it can be anything you want it to be as long as you two understand what each other is talking about. I have heard both terms used and neither one bother me.

Weed-eater is a brand name for the company that first marketed the concept and built the first commercial ones for sale.

As for the category, if you have to look it up in any catalog for any brand it is classified as a String Trimmer.

Hello GarryO. I don't really think there is a difference between them. I've always thought it was just two different names for the same thing. I just call mine a weed whip.
