Could learning greetings in multiple languages backfire for a waitress?

Hello there. So this is my first ever job, and so far I enjoy it immensely in part due to the variety of cultures and nationalities who pass through. So i was considering perhaps learning some greetings or dismissals in the most common languages.

However, because this is my first job i may just be a little paranoid, but is it possible that someone would get offended if you chose to greet them in the language you assume they speak or is it better to always use English? Basically, would learning these people's languages get me more tips?

I live in a line of work where I get many different ethnicities as well. I would say yes it is very good. BUT, I wouldn't speak to them unless you really know. I have made the mistake of speaking Vietnamese to a Korean customer. He was like uhhhh NO lol but he thought it was awesome I knew anything at all!

    So yes indeed it helps!

Bad idea. Many cultures will get offended if you mis-identify them - are you positive you can spot the difference between Chinese and Japanese? What about Chinese and Vietnamese? Japanese/Chinese are pretty sensitive about being mistaken for the other, and I'm sure there are others. (Although there's obviously no difference in language, most Canadians are offended to be mistaken for American, for example). Some will also get offended that just because they have a certain ancestry doesn't mean they speak the language and they consider themselves American first and foremost.

    Stick to English.

It is dependent. Don't study languages which can be rather identical whilst, and do not study greater than 2 at a time. This is private revel in I'm talking from. So for illustration, do not study Spanish and Italian whilst given that they are rather identical. But Spanish and Russian whilst would be adequate. This additionally relies on the man or woman despite the fact that.

Eeee.. yea, I wouldn't do it. You can't just guess at what nationality they are or what language they might speak. Some people might get offended, especially if you get it wrong.

If you do your job well, get them drinks when they need them refilled (this is a biggie), blah blah lol I was going to list the things I really notice when I go out, but you know what I mean. :) Just do a good job and be nice and smile and you'll get decent tips.

If you greet someone in their language, they're probably going to assume you speak that language and say something in response. It will then get very awkward, since you'll have no idea what they just said. That won't help your tips.

It really depends on who you get you might get these of these groups

    a) the family of bilangual people that ostracize you for trying to say hi in there language because its none of your business (probably just stares at you)

    b) my family, who would say something back in spanish in which case if you dont know spanish you wouldnt be able to reply in spanish, possiblly making yourself look stupid (but thats in the eye of the beholder)

    c) the group of people is delighted that you made the effort to make them feel more at home.

So all in all I would say its your preference

    Source(s): has a bilangual family
