What ingredients are added to ice to make dry ice?

What is dry ice? I know what it is, but what chemicals are added to it to keep it so cold and steamy and dry? Why doesn't it melt? You can send a pizza to Colorado from Illinois and it stays frozen. How does this work?

Carbon Dioxide is the only compound that has a gas, liquid and solid form. When compressed and brought down to a temperature of -109.3 degrees fahrenheit you have dry Ice. CO2 doesn't like to stay in a liquid form unless it's under a great deal of pressure so when it's setting in your kitchen instead of melting it turns to gas. It takes such a long time because it's so extremely cold. Which by the way is why you do NOT what to touch it with your bare hands.

"Peter Davies" you're right. And come to think of it there are others as well, it's been a long LONG time since I was in a science class. (I remember the temp. because it was also a favorite radio station of mine way back when). Am I thinking of the fact that CO2 is the only compound that has all 3 forms but will go from a solid to a gas without becoming a liquid first? I'm sure there was something unique about it in regard to the three forms.

Dry ice is frozen Carbon Dioxide, you do not add anything to normal ice to make dry ice, sorry. The pizza sent from Colorado to Illinois is kept on ice the entire time which keeps it frozen.

@Phillip, water is not used in the formation of dry ice.

@CaptainChiliDog, you are wrong, Water has a gas, liquid, and solid form too. Steam, water, and ice. You are correct that it is the only thing that goes from gas to solid without becoming a liquid though.

When you freeze carbon dioxide, the end product will be dry ice. Dry ice has a very low temperature and is typically used as coolant. To keep dry ice from melting, it must be contained in an insulated container. Actually, dry ice does not melt.

carbon dioxide is the only chemical i know of that is used to make dry ice other than water.
