Only writing music on finale??!!?
is it a bad thing that i can only write music on finale? of course i can write duets on blank staff paper but i've been hearing from colleagues that if you cant write orchestral compositions on paper that you're not considered a "good" composer. but i cant hear the music unless i hear the way the instruments sound together in real life. that being said...will it hurt me that i can only write orchestral pieces on finale?

It takes a very, very experienced and well-trained ear to be able to hear an entire orchestra just by looking at a page. Personally, my ear is at the point where I can hear maybe 3 instruments at a time by looking at the page, and I've been playing and composing music since I was 4 (mainly piano solos, however), and I have perfect pitch as well (perfect pitch is when you can name notes that you hear, or hum them when you're given the note name, without prior reference)!
I wouldn't worry about it. Just do what you can for now, and keep practicing your ear training skills. If you have a piano available, try tinkering around with composing on that so that you can hear all the notes together while still not having to have each one make its specific instrument's sound.

Music notation software is a relatively new invention. In the old way, a composer HAD to be able to hear the music in his or her head, but now that is not necessary. If you write brilliant music, I don't think it matters how you came to compose it. The quality of final musical product is what makes you a "good" composer. If your music moves people, that's what is important.
Best of luck!

The composers that I know, Use Finale or Sibelius. They have it on their desktop and laptops. They may do a rough idea in pencil when something hits them and they are away from the computer.
These programs have made it possible for many to compose or arrange that can not hear it all in their head.
Keep doing what works for you.
