Too Afraid to take charge?
Whenever I ride I am too afraid to take charge of the horse ( afraid I'll be bucked, reared) and the horse runs me ragged, I need some help!

i had this same feeling when i was riding high energy horses at my old barn. here are some ways to help this problem
1. in my case i was scared to fall (after a horrible fall of a horse). i found that when i was scared i would hum or sing a song when i was warming up. this took my fear away and let me think about what i was doing.
2. my friend had issues with a horse that had a reputation of bucking and rearing up when asked to speed up. she would talk to her horse and take her time with him and never put him or herself and the issue slowly resolved its self.
3. switching horses or instructors or barns may be in order. have a clean slate to start out new on.

Think of it this way, if you discipline the horse for bucking or rearing he may do it again once or twice but he will get it. But if you don't every time you ride you run the risk of it happening. By disciplining him for it the risk will decrease, and what mabie you will fall once or twice (every horseman does). but by allowing him to buck and rear you, you show him he has the right to run you over. Rearing is dangerous horses can flip over backwards on top of you and kill or perminatly injure you, better to make it stop now, then allow that risk to be there forever. Also if he thinks he owns you, it will eventually transfer to ground manors too, and that is horribly dangerous, because in the horse world they kick or bite each other to show each other who is boss.

That was a huge problem for me when I was younger. I got over it by expirence.Right now a buck a bolt or a rear seems terrifying but once you actually have it happen to you, you will realize you CAN do it. If you don't already have one I strongly suggest a trainer ,they will talk you through it and tell you what you need to do to handle the horse. I promise it will gwt easier, good luck and remember horses can sense fear and everything that happens happens for a reason. :D

sounds to me like you dont trust the horse enough. do some groundwork, teach him/her that you're the boss on the ground BEFORE you start riding. if you're scared, the horse will know and it will only make it more nervous. lunge the horse, change directions, flex, teach tricks with lots of cookies (easiest trick is a hug-stand at the shoulder and get the horses attention to your far hip until it's neck is hugging you) get the horse comfortable and at ease and listening to you on the ground. THEN you will not only know your horse better but also have a better bond with him/her. after confidence on the ground, trust the horse while in the saddle :) hope i helped

take charge the horse will respect you. i was just ridding my 3 year old paint (2nd ride(broke by amish(i mean dead broke))) and he went down for a bit to eat i pulled up and kicked he jumped forward and didnt try to eat again. he was a perfect gentalmem. when ever i ride i know that if i ride and take control i have complet control of the horse and if in not something could go wrong. i ride (usally) big horses 16 hands to 16.3 hands. ive ridden big horses all my life and ive learned tha hard way to be in control my horse would walk right over me and i could never do anything i wanted to do. so when i took control me and my horses had more fun we got to do more things.
so be confident andtake control dont be afraid. :) belive in yourself.

If you're constantly afraid it's going to happen it likely will. Horses will pick up on your nerves and will react accordingly.
Just relax and take things slowly and at your own pace. Horse riding is meant to be pleasurable.
Remember why you started riding in the first place and hold onto those feeling next time you mount up.

You need to take charge! The horse senses your nervous and will pick up on it and react to how you act. So if your calm your horse will be calm. Ask your trainer! Your trainer will probably tell you what to do to get you more confident. Trust the horse!!

You just need to build up your confidence. Talk to your instructor about how you feel. Ask them to help you come up with some exercises that will help you learn to assert yourself. It may also help to ride a less challenging horse, assuming that's an issue.

take charge!! if a horse goes to rear, take ur hand and whop it upside the head, bout twice is all it takes and it will settle down. if u feel one bow up about to buck, reach down on one of ur reigns and pull its head around to ur knee and make it do circles until it calms down. if u dont catch it in time, try NOT to let go of the reigns and get its head back up. if one wants to go a different way then u want it to go, u pull that ignoramus around the direction YOU want to go and get after him with the reigns, they aint made outta leather for nothin! if ur scared, they kno it, its not abuse to make one act right, its making them respect u, they can kill u! make them kno YOURE the boss and not them. size is not in he psycial, but in the mind. if they get in their head they can overpower u, they will try u for everything they r worth, if they get in their head that YOURE the boss and u aint gonna put up with crap, they will respect u more and listen to u better when u tell them to do something
