Ramadan: A Few Questions About The Hijab For Muslim Women?
Ramadan: A Few Questions About The Hijab For Muslim Women?
First off, I'm not a Muslim - I'm a Christian. I'm just asking these questions to try and understand Islam better. I mean no offence by any of these questions, I just feel that I don't know much about Islam and want to know more about it.
1. Do you wear the hijab with sincerity or just because it is commanded in the Qu'ran? I only ask this because there are some Muslim women I've met who wear it just because it's commanded by God (Allah) and not because they also want to. For me there is a huge difference between wearing it because you have to, and wearing it because you believe in wearing it.
2. I was in London this weekend and there were a lot of Muslim women around and quite a few were wearing something called the Braided Hijab. What are your thoughts on this style? Would you consider wearing your headscarf like this?
3. Do you were the hijab in and around your house and when you're in your garden, or do you take it off in your own four walls? I merely ask because when I was in London this weekend the Youth Hostel in which I was staying in looked out over to a block of flats, with balconies. One evening, whilst I was looking out of my window and taking pictures of the skyline, I noticed a Muslim woman hanging out some washing with the headscarf on. Was this just because she was outside, despite being in her own home?
All help would be welcome but please don't be rude. Peace to you all,
:)

Hello Victoria
Thank you for your question, I am happy to see nice and respectful people asking instead of assuming. If we all did this a little more the world would be alot nicer.
1. I wear it for both reasons. One, I obey God even if it's not something I particularly like. God knows what is best of us so I obey. Our own desires can make us not like something, it could be the whispers of satan to. Who knows us better then our Maker, so we should obey Him. Second I actually love my veil. I feel so good in it, I am a Muslim women and not afraid to say so, not afraid to say I love Allah and obey Him. I feel protected from unwanted sexual attention. I force men to deal with me for my intellect, or lack of, not my beauty, or lack of. Hope that makes sense
2. I had to go look this style up, and I can say I don't agree with it. The hijab is not something we should beautify. The purpose of hijab is to keep sexual attention off us, making it beautiful and attractive defeats the purpose. We can add style but there is a limit.
3. When I am in my home I wear what I want, well to a limit lol, I dress different when I am alone with my husband then when I do around my kids lol. But the point is no we don't have to wear it in the home. But if we have men that is not close relative in the home then we would have to wear it. And even if we are home but people can see us we should cover. When I go on my balcony I put on my veil. The women you seen hanging close was wear it cause people could see her, if you could a man could to, so she had to cover.
Dear I hope I have answered your questions. Please feel free to message me anytime if you have any other questions you would like to ask me personally.
And God knows best

1. I wear the hijab first and foremost because it is commanded by Allah swt in the Quran. But I love wearing it, it identifies me as a Muslim, it keeps me from being ogled and it reminds me of my duties.
2. I don't care for the braided hijab style, but that's personal taste. As long as a style covers what it is supposed to cover, I would at least consider it, but my tastes tend to be a little tame (I'm 30+)
3. Inside the house where no one can see you but those who have a specific family relationship, or women, or young children, you don't have to wear it, unless you're praying. But if you're outside where you can be seen (as the lady in your example was) then you do have to wear it.
Your questions were not the least bit rude and I thank you for your interest in Islam. Please feel free to write me if you have any further questions.

1. I WANT to wear it because it is a command from God. Sure there are times when we might be tempted to take it off because as girls/women it is in our nature to want to look pretty, but the fact that wearing the hijab is a commandment from God, hence what is best for us overpowers that temptation.
2. That does seem to be quite common in England.....Maybe :)
3. I only wear it at home if an unrelated man is over or for prayer. I'm assuming she was out in her garden without it because she thought no one would see her there.

I will give you an example basically you have 2 sweets one is covered and the other isn't I drop them both on the floor and you tell me what one would you take? The one that was covered obviously! So that's what Islam does it treats women well ignore other peoples false accusations. That's why we wear hijab so that we are covered and islam tells women not to be slutty

Hi, I appreciate your curiosity, and hopefully my answer will increase your knowledge about Islam,
1) In all religions ,we must follow God, and follow His commands. Not all believers of all religions are sincere, but they follow what their God orders them to do. Just like how in Christianity, fornication is prohibited, most christians do it regardless of what their God orders! But there are some christians who do it (follow God's commands), some with sincerity, some without sincerity, but what ultimately matters to those people is that God Ordered them to follow His rules.
Similarly, in Islam, Allah orders women (and men) to dress modestly. If a person has Love for their God, and Understands the Wisdom behind modesty and wearing the hijab, they will wear the hijab with sincerity. But some people who are obviously less informed about the wisdom of hijab, may wear it because God tells them to. But in the end, it is still good, as long as the woman does not feel forced by a human to wear it (in Islam, there should be no compulsion/force). :)
2) A hijab should cover one's hair, scalp, ears (basically their whole head, except the face), neck, and chest. If the braided hijab meets these requirements, yes, I'd wear it. :)
3) Muslim women don't need to wear hijab in front of their family, and any other women, and don't need to wear it in the garden, Unless their garden is not private e.g. people can see them whilst they're in the garden. Just as how you could view that muslim woman in her garden in London, a man could also peek at her. This is why that woman wore hijab in her garden. :)
Peace to you, Allah bless you.
Take care :)

"I only ask this because there are some Muslim women I've met who wear it just because it's commanded by God (Allah) and not because they also want to."
There are people called Muslims and there are people called Mu-mins, The Muslims like you stated understand the concept, but the Mu-mins obey unconditionally because God the most glorious the most exalted then his Messengers know what is best for us…Both are correct but only one is recommended

Just came here to tell you that ur questions are awesome.
^_^
thanks for asking me about my religion.
The Bible also asks Women to wear veils as in Islam
{I Corinthians 11:3-10}, this lowers the chance of rape, (God Forbid),
http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cri_rap-crime-ra...
1 Corinthians 11. (King James Version)
5-6 But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven . 6 For if the woman be not covered , let her also be shorn : but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven , let her be covered .
10 For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head because of the angels.
13 Judge in yourselves : is it comely that a woman pray unto God uncovered?
1 Corinthians 11 (New Revised Standard)
5 but any woman who prays or prophesies with her head unveiled disgraces her head—it is one and the same thing as having her head shaved. 6 For if a woman will not veil herself, then she should cut off her hair; but if it is disgraceful for a woman to have her hair cut off or to be shaved, she should wear a veil.
10 For this reason a woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels
13 Judge for yourselves: is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head unveiled?

when our belief is strong in Islam, these things become things that we want to do (like hijab and praying) first our faith is there, and because it is, we feel like we want to dedicate more to our religion cos we want to, not cos we have to. even if a muslim doesnt wear hijab, we feel that the faith in the heart is more important (some muslim girls dont wear hijab cos they don want to) anyway in our religion its just important to dress modestly (no low cut tops, short skirts, tight clothes) hijab is something we do as our faith gets stronger in time. its all about been convinced, not force. when u sit with 1 person with different opinions, u either convince him in urs or he either convinces u in theirs. so Islam convinces us. (not brainwashes us) cos it has answers to every question u could have about life and about religion. it doesnt tell u to wear hijab and dress modestly for no reason, it gives the reasons as to why and ur either convinced or ur either not.

Most Muslims, see the hijab, burka as compulsory and Muslims are murdered for not wearing one. Google Aqsa Pervez.
prisoner better to shave the head than chop it off.

Hiiii :) I would be very hounoured to answer your Q's :) LOL
1) I wear My Hijab Because I love it I would never take it of for nothing, Its a part of my identity and it makes me who i am. If i wasnt allowed to wear HIjab then i think i would never step foot out of my house because i can never imagine not wearing it :) I wear it because i want to not because I am Forced to or Because The Qur'an says i HAVE to.. It doesnt.. you Have to want to wear it and be sincere to it so its your choice when you want to start wearing it sincerly- But you should wear it as soon as possible :)
2) Yup I see.. Those Braided ones .. There Called the rapunzel ones.. If you wanna check out more headscarf styles there is a really good Lady who shows how to do it on Youtube - Amenakin hijab styles. And also she answers similar Q's to those on youtube and her videos are quite good i recommend you watch them if you want to :) And me Nahh i wouldnt ever want to wear the Bradied styles.. :/ Im more into the waterfall styles
3) Nope we dont have to wear it inside our house and the garden if its a private one then no but if others can see you then nope :) Thats why the lady had her scarf on to do the washing because see you were looking another man or someone else could have been looking :)
It was nice of you to ask about Islam And Hijabi's ( what we call girls who wear hijabs =P)
Take Care x
