Voters blame Bush more than Obama for the economy

Voters are increasingly displeased with President Obama's handling of the economy, but a new poll finds most Americans still think George W. Bush is responsible for the nation's dismal financial state.

According to a new Quinnipiac poll, 54 percent of those surveyed say Bush is responsible for the "current condition" of the economy, compared to just 27 percent who blame Obama. Among self-described independent voters, a key 2012 voting bloc, the number shifts slightly: 49 percent point the finger at the former GOP president, while 24 percent blame Obama.

Supporters of Obama's re-election will no doubt view the number as a good sign for the president's bid for a second term. But they shouldn't get excited yet.

Polls over the last year have consistently found that voters continue to blame Bush more than Obama for the struggling economy. Yet Obama and Democrats have consistently struggled to translate that displeasure with Bush into a vote against GOP candidates.

But that could be changing. While Obama's approval rating on the economy is nothing short of dismal—just 38 percent approve—the Quinnipiac poll finds more Americans trust the president on the issue than the GOP congress, 45 percent to 38 percent. Meanwhile, 48 percent of those surveyed say they will blame the GOP congress if a debt deal isn't approved, compared to 34 percent who say they will blame the Obama administration.

Those aren't great numbers for Republicans who are likely to face just as much political peril as Obama in 2012 if the economy doesn't improve over the next year.

The Quinnipiac poll also finds major support for one of the concessions Obama has called for in the debt deal: 67 percent say any deal on the deficit should also include tax increases on the wealthy and corporations, in addition to spending cuts.

Wasn't the nearly TRILLION dollar porculus (stimulus) immediately after Obama was inaugurated the bold step that the Democrats put all their chips on? They spun the wheel with one TRILLION (with a T) of our grandchildrens' tax dollars on the table and they lost. After that, the Democrats own the recession. The bailouts of Wall Street and of Detroit. The "shovel ready" projects that won't be ready for years, when they could well be inflationary, all that is Obama's and the Democrats. The only thing that Congress can do that has an immediate effect on the economy is to cut corporate taxes. But Obama wants to raise corporate taxes by calling the tax increases, tax loopholes. His handling of the economy is reminiscent of the Three Stooges on the leaking rowboat drilling the bottom to let the water out. He is following the standard Democratic recipe of collecting taxes, appointing czars like Elizabeth Warren whom the Senate would not confirm because of her well-known Leftist views, and having the czars dole out the funds for public projects that they deem worthy. If it sounds Stalinist, it is.

The people that you polled are probably all demorcats, illiterate and bias. I can't believe how ignorant the American people have become. This was once a proud and powerful nation and now it is falling apart at the seams. We as a nation are so focused on the Middle East and other countries. That we have chosen to neglect and ignore the crisis this nation is heading towards. By the way, Bush was a much better president than Obama. At least, Bush didn't coward down to any foreign countries and create this dumbass stimulus package.

I agree that things were falling apart under Bush, I also agree Obama is the President and It's his job to fix it. But there is no way he can fix it without help from the republicans and they flat refuse to help. Unfortunately nothing is getting done. Blame has to be equally divided

The problem with polls is that when the polls shows bad news for one party or the other, that party starts calling the polls biased against them, and then, start calling various political groups "stupid".

Well of course people are going to blame Bush because they don't realize it's Obama's job to fix it. He has done NOTHING! He's made worse and now we are on the brink of disaster.

because it started going down under Bush... and if Obama can get unemployment moving in the right direction... he will win... "I solved Bush's mess" just like Reagan said about Carter's mess...

Obama just needs to be around 7 percent with decreases in unmployment in the prior 4 months leading up to the elctions...

The GOP spin has failed to convince America. Everybody knows the recession started under Bush. They also know that success is measured in terms of catastrophe avoided. Nobody expected Obama to repair all of Bush's mistakes in 3 years... nobody except rightists that is.
