I've had AT&T for years and I get to laugh when my unfortunate Verizon-having associates are holding their phones up to the air in an attempt to get a signal and I have 5 full bars of service

A lot of people use verizon and Verizon phone to phone (Calls or texts) are free. I personally use Verizon, but it isn't very good. They don't normally give you good customer service, but AT&T is worse. If you do a pay as you go plan the chartges for a text is ridiculous. But I believe you have a choice of data plan for your smart phone, for Verizon it's $30. I've been in Verizon for a while so I only have a charge of $68.90 for two phones! (No smart phone obviously) I doubt you will be able to get this kind of deal for even yourself only.
If you do want a new carrier, I'd try T-Mobile, there's a $69.99 plan and it's unlimited everything! Even Data plans!

Just like "oh hey" said, a lot of people say verizon has better reception but AT&T has the awesome phones

I have Verizon and I like it. AT&T does not work anywhere near where I live its terrible
