usually when they are about ready to release their babies they will become shy and very territorial. THEY WILL EAT THE FRY IF NOT SEPARATED! if you want to keep them then you definitely need to separate them as even their mother will eat the young ones. however it will not harm the adult fish in any way to let them eat the babies if they're unwanted. if you decide to keep them in a separate tank with a filter then it is necessary to put something over the filter to prevent them being sucked up (i bought a cheap pair of pantyhose and secured it onto the intake for the filter with a rubber band) because filters get hungry too! also some fish stores will buy the fry from you when they get to a certain size. and it seems to me that you could put quite a few more fish in that 30 gallon tank. i would say up to about 25 fish or so. remember to not overcrowd your tank. the babies will be safe to put back with the other fish when they are large enough that they wont fit in the other fishes mouth. GOOD LUCK TO YOU! i just had a bunch of baby guppies today and my best friend had a bunch of convict cichlids hatch almost at the same time!! breeding livebearers is a LOT of fun! enjoy and remember to do your research so your babies dont die! ;~)
