My supervisors keep threatening to take money from my check...?
I've been working for this company for a few months now and I keep making some mistakes. An example is I accepted a personal check, which we were not allowed to do (I didn't know that), and the check was not approved. My supervisors keep telling me if the lady does not pay then they will take the money from my check. Is that legal? Can they really take money from my pay checks if that lady never pays? Also, I had forgot to clock either in or out one day and it threw off the rest of the week. They told me I was responsible for making sure my times are correct and they will correct it this time but next time it will be my job to make catch the error and if I forget to clock in then I will not be compensated for that time. Is it legally possible for them to do that too? Of course I'm going to make sure I do everything right, but I think these threats are ridiculous. I haven't made many mistakes and I understand I can be fired for making mistakes, but that isn't my question.
Is it legal for them to take money out of my payroll check?

It was your responsibility to ask someone if you were unsure re: the cashing of a personal check. As to whether they can remove those funds from your check, you would need to ask an attorney, as each case, State, etc is different. As to the clocking in: you indeed are responsible to clock in/out at the correct times - that is how the employee is paid, and if you don't clock in/out, then how is your employer supposed to know the hours you worked ?? No offense, but it appears that you are young and have very little experience in the work world; may these "lessons" be a learning tool for you for the future

where are you?
in the US in a few states a deduction for a mistake is legal BUT only if that deduction does not take your wages below minimum wage for the week...... in MANY states it is ILLEGAL to make such a deduction regardless of how much you make......
it is perfectly legal to correct your wages on the next paycheck BUT they must pay you.....
the EMPLOYER is responsible for maintaining accurate time records and they may discipline you up to termination BUT they have to pay you even if you don't clock in and out correctly
