coltrane was just about the most perfect combination of the technical and improvisational as any musician has ever been. it's no wonder that coltrane was one of jerry garcia's biggest influences.

I love both, but lean slightly to John Coltrane, I'm currently listening to his album 'My Favorite Things'. In a recent question on Y!A, I listed it as one of my 50 favorite albums ever.

Wow... tough choice, as those are my top 2 jazz composers.
Miles, imo had a more diverse discography, but I gotta go Coltrane. No one has ever played more soul searchingly beautiful, mournful and emotive sax than he. IMO, no piece of music comes close to "Alabama" for pure raw emotion.

Wow two talented men! Probably Miles Davis for me. I like his music more.
