I live in southern LA around Grand Isle and ALOT of people down here use popping corks (can be bought at Wal-Mart) -- Cajun Thunder is one of the "big name" popping corks -- because they're so easy to use... all you have to do is stick a hook on the clip-swivel and stick a piece of shrimp (artificial or real) or an artificial minnow on there. You can also use a bottom rig (can be bought at Wal-Mart for less than $1.00.) with shrimp. If you are fishing for slot reds, shrimp or artificial bait is your best bet, however if you are fishing for Bull reds (big reds), use cutbait, preferably mullet, and/or squid. Some other great redfish lures are the Catch 2000 and the "Dog" series made by MirrOlure. The Zara Spook made by Heddon is also a fantastic topwater lure for reds. Good Luck! You don't need a wire leader or anything like that. As for hook size, 4/0 seems just about right. Line all depends on what you think is best. You could get away with 8 lb test but with the erratic runs that reds make, I wouldn't trust it. I use 14 pound test just to make sure that I can get them in the boat.

AH! you're the guy asking about the rig for saltwater trout. after seeing this question regarding redfish, l know that you were enquiring about (weakfish) seatrout. use the popping float rig.
for reds, look up a "fishfinder rig". it basically is a sliding sinker on your line with a fairly long leader (again, not wire) and about a 1/0 to 4/0 hook. use a crab or chink of bunker or croaker for bait.
but better yet would be to use one of any number of plugs and jigs, either on top or bottom. reds will very easily take artificials. also less chance of their being injured by swallowed hooks.
good luck.

if your on a pier or by a oyster bed you could hook a big crab, and let it crawl around. that's how ive caught some big redfish.
