Service Engine Soon Light & Codes?
I saw an article on Yahoo! News about a week ago that claimed that you could do something with the ignition switch to find out a code that would tell you what was causing your Service Engine Soon Light to come on; then the article went on to tell you that there was a site on the internet that would tell you for free what that code meant. Well, my Service Engine Soon Light has come on, but I can't remember what the article said, and I can't find any helpful information on the internet. Do any of you know how to access the code without special tools and where to find out what the codes mean once I know the number? (Another article on the web said that the light indicates emission problems, but that a rough running engine will indicate that the problem is serious.) I hate to pay a mechanic $150 just to hook the car up to a computer, and then pay him again to fix whatever is wrong.

1996 and newer vehicles have the On Board Diagnostics (OBD-II) connector located below the steering wheel under the dash. You buy an OBD-II code reader or scanner and simply connect it to the connector port to read out yellow check engine light error codes and operating parameters (scanner).

Older OBD-I vehicles can read the computer error codes out manually depending on your make year model car.

Some cars have two lights, a service light and a check engine light. My Honda Accord has both. The Service engine soon means that the oil, transmission fluid, or something else is due service. A check engine light (yellow motor) means that there has been a fault detected.

get a paper clip and make a U shape out of it and stick the 2 prongs into the upper right terminals on the connector where they put the scanner. Then turn key to "on" position and pull codes using the flashing "check engine" light.
