What animal scat was I seeing? ?
I was hiking at about 9000 feet in Colorado yesterday and saw a few piles if animal dropping on a ridge I was climbing on. They were in a pile and the pellets looked like deer but were about a half an inch wide. What animal do you think this could be?

At that elevation, my guess would be rocky mountain goat or bighorn sheep. Their scat is similar in appearance.

They might be mule deer or elk. There's a rather good book on tracks and scat by Murie. Look for it.

might be the leftovers of a owls meal. owls coughs up what is undigestible in a pellet
