What does Restore File System do on PS3?

Does it just fix what is messed up, or does it delete everything? Weird confetti-looking colors are showing up on my son's games, and when he contacted Activison for support, they recommended he try this. (There is also an option to Restore PS3 System, but their tech support stressed that Restore File System is what we should try). I just don't want him to lose everything.

    The dots on your screen while playing games is due to hard drive corruption (probably due to it shutting down incorrectly). You will unfortunately need to restore the system, or reformat the HDD (either one will wipe your memory clean) by starting it in safe mode ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_2YnGGUOJks ). To avoid this happening again, make sure your son is shutting off his PS3 correctly by the button in the front or the menu, dont ever shut it off while memory is being saved or something is being installed, or shut it off by unplugging it directly from the wall.
