Variations of Leona (My grandma's name)?
My grandmother's name was Leona, and her nickname was Loni (pronounced Loh-nee) and she passed away when I was 15 from cancer. She was the most warm, pure, kind woman I ever met. I am pregnant with my second baby but I'm not sure of the gender yet. If this baby is a girl I'd love to name her after my grandmother, but I think the name Leona is a little dated. My child would probably grow up feeling embarrassed by her name and I'd kind of feel silly calling my baby Leona anyway because I can't help but associate the name with my grandmother. In addition to all that, I want the name Leona to always represent my grandma first and foremost in our family.
I was thinking Lana might be a good variation. It has a similar sound. It's a little more common and youthful than the name Leona. I would probably nickname her Lani (pronounced Lah-nee) which is very similar to my grandma's nickname Loni. What do you think? If you don't like Lana could you suggest any other names which sound and look similar to Leona?
If it's a boy I'd like to honor my grandma as well. I'm thinking Owen Leon right now, because I don't like Leon enough to use it as a first name, but it's only 1 letter short of my grandma's name.
I feel very connected to the idea of honoring my grandma's name so please try to only suggest names which would do that (unless you want to suggest some middle names). Thanks all!
Thanks for the idea Ginny. Lena is nice too. It's exactly my grandma's name without the "o" and we didn't even think of it until now. The only thing I don't like about it is that Lani wouldn't make sense as a nickname for Lena. It's definitely a name we'll consider though, thanks!
We were also thinking of the name Leah at one point because we love the way it sounds but I think it is too different from Leona to really honor my grandma.
Thanks for the suggestions! I also really like the name Leana. That one is almost exactly my grandma's name but it has a different vibe to it. Hubby kind of likes it too but I think he's annoyed by the spelling since he's only ever seen it spelled Liana.

I really like Leona by itself, and Lana isn't too bad either, but I prefer Leona over Lana personally.
Girls:
• Leoni (lee-oh-nee)
• Lena (lee-nuh)
• Leana (lee-ah-nuh)
• Leina (lay-nuh)
Boys:
The only names I can think of that have a "Leon" in them are Napoleon, and Leonard, and they may be a little too out there for your taste.
Owen Leon is nice, although both names are short and both have the same 'n' ending, so it throws me off a bit. Just something to think about. What about something like Oliver Leon? If you're set on Owen Leon, then disregard my opinion. :)
Edit --
I'm glad to hear that you're liking the suggestions! The reason I suggested the spelling Leana rather than Liana (which is the more traditional spelling I think) is because I wanted to implement the relevance to honor your grandmother. Overall, it's up to you and your husband to decide what works best for your likings. The names and spellings alone are definitely something to consider though.

What about Leonie? It's pronounced the same as Leona but with an eee sound at the end instead of the a. I know a girl call this and I've always thought it's a unique lovely name. That would be very similar to your grandma's name but slightly more modern. Always it work for a baby girl and when she's older. What about Leonie Emilia? Leonie Grace? Leonie Faith? Leonie Paige? Leonie Marie? Leonie Rae?
I think Lena is cute too but I prefer Elena. Owen Leon is lovely for a boy. I'm not too keen on the boys name Leon for a 1st name either so I think Owen Leon would be just right.

I really like your grandma's name and the whole idea.
Lana is not bad, but I don't see it as pretty as Leona. Lani is cute.
The French variation of Leona is Leonne, but I guess you wouldn't like it because you dont really like Leon.
What about using the letters of your grandma's name (Leona), but go a little farer with the sound:
Ilona
Elena
Alina
Noelle
Noel
Since Leona means lion, maybe you could do something with it, trying to find other names with the same meaning?
Boys names with the meaning lion:
Leo
Leonidas
Lev
Levon
Lionel
I love, love, love Leo, it is such a good, strong, handsome name.

That is a really sweet thing to do, It is always nice honouring members of your family when naming a child!
Leona is a really pretty name, and it doesn't sound dated at all, but i understand you don't want your daughter to have the exact same name as your grandmother, maybe you could use it as a middle name then?
Lana is a nice name too, but not my favourite, for some reason it just seems a little 'unfinished' to me... i prefer Alana or Elana or something, but those are VERY different to Leona. The nickname Lani is cute too... and that would be good too, because yous aid it was similar to your grandmothers's nickname.
Leah is a really pretty name too, It sounds much better than Lana, you said that it sounds too different from Leona but actually it seems closer to Leona than Lana, because they both have then 'Lee' sounds too. Though the only problem is the shortness of the name, the only possible nickname could be Lee or LeeLee even.
Also Leana/Liana is really pretty, and it doesn't matter if you spell it Liana, it is the sounds very similar and is my favourite ot of all the names you have mentioned. If you really do care about the spelling and making it similar why not just spell it Leana anyway, atleast it isn't a trashy spelling.
And for the boys name why not try Leo? It sounds much nicer than Leon and you could use it as a first name too then! Owen is a really nice name, though it doesn't go with Leon because they both end in similar sounds. Leo Owen or Owen Leo would be alot better.
suggestions:
•Leila (Lay-la)
• Leela (Lee-la)
• Leola (lee-oh-la)
• Leigh (lee)
• Leia (Lay-uh)
• Fiona (Fee-oh-nuh)
• Leoni (Lee-oh-nee)
• Leonelle (Lee-oh-nell)
•Leonia (Lee-oh-nee-uh)

I actually really like your grandmother's name, it's very pretty, and I don't think it seems dated. It has a unique quality to it, but if you do feel you want to keep your grandmother's name representative for the woman herself, a variation of it can still be a beautiful name, and if your child's possible namesake was as lovely and warm a person as you described her to be, your child will appreciate the story and the love behind her name.
Lana sounds nice!
Here are my other suggestions:
Lorna
Lona
Elaine
But the boy name you have picked out sounds adorable!
Congratulations!

I think it's really sweet that you're naming her after your grandma. And actually, I have something almost in common with you- my grandma's name is Leora! As for variations of your grandma's name, lots of people mentioned really good ones. I think Laina could work as well.

When it comes down to those two I like Leona Margaret best, but to be honest I like Leona Jane even better, I don't like Frances sorry.
