Keartex Hoof Hardener works fantastically. It can be pretty harsh on the wallet, but I've never found anything that works better on hooves. Also you can use Absorbine Hooflex Conditioner on the top part of their hooves to prevent the bottom of it from becoming cracked.
My procedure is bottom half Keratex (around nails if they have shoes on) and Absorbine on the top half and in the very top of the hairline.
Hope this helps!

Lizabeth has some good suggestions.
Keretex is a great brand- and has a product for almost every type of hoof problem.
At my barn, we have keretex hardener, conditioner, putty, mud-fever powder and white-line treatments.
It IS expensive. But it will work.
If you don't want to use keretex- and type of wax or oil will do the trick. I've seen people use beeswax, ostrich oil, and baby oil.
However- when using oils to condition a hoof, you need to be careful that you don't over-condition. Over conditioning will stunt the natural oil production of the hoof- and you're problems will get worse.
I would suggest getting a commercial brand and following the instructions.
Good luck!

OK get ready for a stream of people telling you NOT to put anything on your horses hooves.....
I personally will put on a little farriers choice or Effem if it is a really dry summer.
Apart from this I feed my guys biotin which really helps with promoting new hoof growth and aids in strengthening the hoof walls. With this your feeds will also need to contain some beneficial fats to help break this down. I feed rice bran in conjunction with it, or you could just add some rice bran oil.

My horse's hooves were like that. They have hoof oil at pretty much any tack store and it works wonders! He hasn't pulled a shoe since!

Cornucresine is great for moisturising/strengthening dry hooves and also for promoting hair growth, many people swear by it.

I've always heard that fish oil in existing cracks will help them heal faster. But I don't know about preventing them.

SABLENE!! It's a 'hoof cream' but basically a quite soft 'hard hoof oil' and it's full of moisture!! Love it!!

I love Farnam Rainmaker, it's super easy to use (just paint it on) and it really helps. Ask your vet and/or farrier about it.... I'm sure they'll be able to give you a lot more help.
