What should I do with 10 old Hard Drives?

I've got 10 HDDs that I don't know what to do with! I want to throw them away for recycling, but they are from our company computers and I'm paranoid about data theft.

1) I either need to send them off to get shredded to permanently destroy them.

2) I need someone to recommend some formatting/shredding software that completely destroys all data on the drives before giving them to some sort of charity computer service maybe...

formatting the drive doesn't get rid of any data at all - it just clears the FAT

you can find some very good DoD certified data shredders for free on the net

if they are working drives, someone will appreciate the donation

Use "CCleaner". Under tools it offers drive wiping with up to 35 passes over the drive.

If you want to be a bit more direct, pound them down with a sledge.

Move a magnet over it a bit. Nice and simple. The stronger the magnet, the better.

GO to sourceforge.net and download the free eraser programme. You can over-write everything seven times, after which it is virtually impossible to detect anything. It takes time.

I would suggest a bloody big hammer or a blast furnace.

Format and sell or donate them

If they work, formate and delete everything on them. And then sell them.
