How much to tip a taxi driver?
My husband is going to Philly PA and will have to take a taxi. This is the first time taking a taxi and we're not sure on the proper etiquette in tipping?

On a mid to long ride, 10 per cent would probably be a minimum, with 20 per cent much appreciated. If the ride is extremly short, maybe do some more because the driver may have to go get back into a line someplace.
Rates vary from city to city. Bear in mind that the way drivers operate varies also. In a lot of areas they "lease their cab" and operate as independent contractors whereas in Las Vegas all of the drivers are employees of only several companies throughout the city, because of the way it is set up.
I will also say that a lot of what you tip should depend on the driver's courtesy and honesty. Some people in the industry give others a bad name. They might be on the rude or course side, or they might tend to take advantage of passengers and "long haul" them (to get more money) if they perceive they're unfamiliar with the area. Helping with baggage should be a common courtesy on the part of drivers, unless he or she is old or disabled.
An honest driver is worth a lot. Your safety on dangerous roadways is in his hands and you need to be able to trust him or her.

If he's charging a flat rate from the airport, tip $3 to $5 depends on if he helps you with your bags.
If you're taking short trips around the city, fares up to $10 tip the change plus a dollar. Locals say tip an extra dollar if you're lucky enough to get a driver who is running his AC!

My guess 2 bucks on the first 10,then a dollar for each ten after that . $20 ride 3 bucks $40 5 bucks.etc.

I don't tip a whole lot unless they help me with my bags or are friendly and helpful. If the cab ride was $11 and they were quiet and not too friendly, I'll give a dollar or 2 on top of the fare. If they helped me with my bags, were friendly and helpful, I'll give around 5.

I usually round up to the nearest 5 and then add 10, but then my Mother drove a hack and I tip heavy in her memory.

Well I just do it to sum up a bill. For example if the cost is 18.75 I would give them 20.... I hate having coins in my purse.
