Americans, how do you feel about the UK's business secretary describing some of your congressmen as "nutters"?

Well obviously there are a lot of nutters in Congress....that's a given. A lot of nutters there vote. It's refreshing to hear a British politician say so though...after so many years of wondering quite what Tony Blair and Gordon Brown LOOKED like ...so far had they inserted their heads up any available American anus.

BUT...that having been said, I must say that it sticks in my craw to have a Tory call anyone else a Right Wing nutjob. This is the Party that still worships at the altar of Maggot Thatcher....the greatest war mongering ideologue to emerge in Europe since Hitler.And quite the destroyer of the domestic economy in her own right. At least Hitler managed to get Germany working again....all she did was manage to get the unemployed standing about in small groups of half a million. And this mob aren't doing a lot better on that score either.

To understand American politics, you have to realize how Congressmen get re-elected.

By launching a big campaign, they become Congressmen. A lot of back-slapping is involved.

They look like good Congressional material in the neatly pressed suit and they promise good things will happen to the community, new projects, new jobs.

Then they establish an office in town, and they make themselves available to the locals for whatever little problem the ordinary guy has.

Trouble getting your car registration back? Don't you worry, I'll push it through myself.

Son wants to go to West Point? Never fear, I'll sponsor him.

And so on, if it could require the help of a Congressman, they will tend to it.

So, by word of mouth, the news spreads that Congressman So-and-So is the friend of the people. He gets things done.

So, next election, nobody stands a chance against him.

Of course some of them are crazy. But we rarely unseat an old Congressman. Too many people are indebted to him.

1. I would agree with him, some of our congressmen/women are certifiable nuts. Yet I would counter that some of your representatives are also nuts...

3. If this is some stupid attempt to bash Americans you failed, if I listed all of the crappy things the UK has done over the many many many years it existed we would be here all night.

Edit- Please I already live in a nation that makes it a point to dislike Americans, your essay would probably make me laugh. Personally I think many things are wrong with our nation, but why don't you work on your own nation before picking apart America, or better yet, why don't you actually immigrate here, then you can have a valid opinion. Don't be so smug, it's why everyone hates the English.

EDIT- I am well aware of there being many different parts of the UK as a whole- England, Wales, Scotland Northern Ireland. Either way, why should I care if you Scottish or English or what the hell ever you want to call yourself, you are indeed a British national right?

Few politicians have the experience (ex-Shell man) and qualifications (Cambridge and PhD) which our Vince has. Unlike many jumped-up political cadres and career politicians, Dr Cable can speak authoritatively on economics and business in the real world. So when he calls some of these right-wing US Congressmen "nutters" we all should sit up and take note. In the past, Dr Cable had been proven right when judging the suitability of New International's attempted takeover of BSkyB, unlike the dodgy judgment of his "boss" who could not tell a smelly egg from a fresh one even when told. No doubt his (Dr Cable) assessment of these "nutters" will prove to be spot-on.

unfortunately these people are not doing this because they are nutters. I wish it were that simple. We are seeing, in no uncertain terms that politics and governments are truly meaningless . . . . it is the money that decides everything, the markets were stuck and trading in a very narrow range for months. We need something to move them (profit is created by volatility) . . . oh and how's that whole tabloid thing working out over there (speaking of "nutters"), be sure you're listening for those little "clicks" whenever you use your phone, and I would surely back off on texting for a while.

Well the Business Secretary is pretty spot on, some of our Congressmen ARE nutters!

And personally I think our entire system should just collapse so we can rebuild and start all over again. It's the only way I think we will ever be able to fix our problems. And even then I am not sure.

Are you suggesting the right-wing congressmen he was talking about aren't nuts? It seems like a reasonable assessment.

For the record though, we have no shortage of lunatics here in the UK either. If the USA was still under our control things would be exactly the same, except they'd probably have more nutters than they do now and they'd drink more tea.
