I am an English teacher who lives in Okinawa, Japan. I'm president of the local free thinkers chapter, married, and I keep two cats, and foster other cats from time to time. I like comedy movies, hiking, and going to the beach, I don't like religion, scary movies, clubs, and rainy days.

  • What does historically specific mean?

I need to turn in an assignment tomorrow and the professor asks "How is this issue historically significant and historically specific?" It's for a sociology class and I'm writing about youth unemployment.

  • Where in China should I go for Chinese New Year 2012?

China is relatively close to where I live and I want to go for the Year of Snake (next year). My top choices are Hong Kong, Beijing, and Shanghai. If you have an idea of where I should go, please let me know why you picked it. Thanks.

  • Issues with MPF (USAF)?

My husband (active USAF) and I (non-military) are stationed on Okinawa. We have a DEROs date of May 2013, however MPF never sent the updated DEROs date (it used to be May 2012) to the big air force. We now have orders to Kirtland AFB, and even though our DEROs here it was approved by the air force. Neither my husband nor I desire to go to Kirtland. What is the common protocol with MPF mistakes? Do the orders to Kirtland get canceled because MPF made a mistake (like they always do!) or do we have to go to Kirtland because some idiot A1C decided he didn't feel like working that day? Just let me know if anything like this every happened to you or someone you know and the outcome. Bonus points if you were/are in MPF.

  • family crests for kimono?

I am an American living in Japan, and I absolutely LOVE kimonos. I have several and I'm looking to add a formal kimono to my collection, however, I do not have a Japanese family crest (well... duh). What would be the appropriate course of action? Design my own family crest? Ask around for any defunct or extinct family crests? Simply not wear family crests on my formal kimono?

Please don't answer unless you have a knowledge of kimonos and Japanese tradition.

  • What about homosexuality bothers you so much?

Seriously, I want the REASON and LOGIC behind it.

    Rules-

    1. Don't quote scripture- I want your thoughts.

    2. No 'because it's not natural'... Because neither is laser eye surgery or clothes, they aren't 'natural' as well.

    3. Don't bother with 'well the dictionary says...' I am well aware of the definition of marriage.

    4. You can use scientific reasons, but these must come from an UNBIASED source (include link).

Now that you know the rules, please let me know what you think.

  • Christians, would you vote in someone with different beliefs then you into office?

Someone who is as fervent as Rick Perry with their beliefs, who not only regularly participate but organize public events around it. Who some would consider are almost unconstitutional about it.

    What if they were Islamic?

    What if they were atheist?

This is meant to be serious, other theists and atheists can chime in with their thoughts, but this question is directed to America's majority.

  • Where is the persecution coming from?

I hear Christians talk of constantly getting persecuted, and I want to know, exactly who are you being persecuted by and how?

Y!A does not count, if you count this as persecution, you're a wiener.

Please don't give me crap about Romans and what not, I am well aware of that thanks, I'm only interested and what is persecuting you.

Non-Christians- Please don't answer, I honestly want to know about this.

  • What percentage of theists have a college education or more?

This isn't to prove a point or anything, I've been looking up statistics on atheists, and I can't find any demographics on Christians, or any religion for that matter on things like college education. A good answer would include an unbiased source, like a government survey or a Gallup pole, a best answer would include more than one source. Thank you, I am generally curious about the demographics of college education.

--This isn't a debate on who is better or worse, please just post your answer and a source.

    -Thanks!
